How cord blood is collected?

Umbilical cord is cut after the baby is born. Umbilical cord is sterilized by alcholol. Cord blood is collected from the placenta part. Unless it is collected, it is discarded with the placenta. Right after the baby is born, umbilical cord is tied up and seperated, the blood inside the cord, that is connected to placenta, is collected to a sterile bag system that contains anticoagulant. Approximately 35-120 ml blood can be collected and within 48 hours the blood is transferred to cord blood bank.

Collection procedure of cord blood would not affect birth procedure and the baby. Generally collection procedure is conducted by physician in charge.
